Visitor Tips
Insider advice to make the most of your visit to Chora Museum
1
After your visit, walk 10 to 15 minutes downhill toward Balat for a tea or Turkish coffee break, because the cafe options there are much better than relying on whatever is closest to the mosque entrance.
2
For the best exterior photo, walk a little uphill into the garden and frame the dome and minaret together, which first time visitors often miss by stopping only at the entrance gate.
3
If you want the cleanest photos, shoot in the outer and inner narthex right after opening when the light is softer, the corridors are emptier, and there is less chance of people standing under the mosaics.
4
Bring a scarf and wear long trousers or a below knee skirt so you do not have to buy or borrow extra covering at the entrance and risk delays.
5
Skip a taxi from Sultanahmet if you want to save money, take a bus or tram toward Edirnekapi and walk the last few minutes, which is much cheaper and often just as fast in traffic.
6
Check the same day prayer times before leaving your hotel and plan to enter at least 45 minutes before the next prayer, because tourist access stops about 15 minutes before prayer begins.
7
Arrive at 9:00 AM on a weekday, except Friday, because the first hour is usually the quietest and gives you the best chance to see the mosaics before tour groups and prayer related closures.
